Orwell 2

(1984, Dystopian Government)
“George Orwell appears to have taken this 1941 speech and used it, along with his own experiences at the BBC, to create by reversal, the four key ministries of government in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. Each is focused on an object in exquisite irony, utterly antithetical to its name so that the Ministry of Truth is concerned with lies, an idea that Orwell seems to have gained by his work at the BBC. The Ministry of Truth as a Ministry of Lies would also be a parody of the first of the four freedoms: “Freedom of speech”. “The Ministry of Peace concerns itself with war”, wrote Orwell. A few years earlier, Roosevelt had described the fourth of his freedoms as being “Freedom from fear”, meaning a reduction of world armament to the point “that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighbor – anywhere in the world.” Reality said otherwise and so did Orwell in describing the “Ministry of Peace.” “… the Ministry of Love”, wrote Orwell, was in reality concerned “with torture.” The second of the four freedoms addressed the issue of religion. If “God is love” then the “Ministry of Love” could be interpreted as mocking that ideal as well. Finally Orwell described “… the Ministry of Plenty” as dealing in reality “with starvation.” The third of Roosevelt’s four freedoms addressed the issue of freedom from want, which he claimed “means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitants – everywhere in the world.” Orwell seems to have heard these words with a sarcastic mindset and in light of present day developments and outsourcing, he may well have been correct in his interpretation."

========

(1984)
Oceania (ideology: Ingsoc (English Socialism)), Eurasia (ideology: Neo-Bolshevism) and Eastasia (ideology: Death Worship or Obliteration of the Self). In terms of the political map of the late 1940s when the book was written, Oceania covers the areas of the British Empire and Commonwealth, the United States of America and Latin America; Eastasia corresponds to China, Japan, Korea, and India, and Eurasia corresponds to the Soviet Union and Continental Europe. The United Kingdom’s placement in Oceania rather than in Eurasia is commented upon in the book as an undisputed historic anomaly.

Government Structure:

The Department of Truth
This department is in charge of propaganda, espionage and misinformation. Stadistics about the War Effort, War Casualties, Production of each Company and the “d’” adjustment for the people who work there are presented there but they actually said nothing. They keep the Citizens blinded about what happened in the past that provoked this new kind of government. “Things have allways been and will always been the same”. They also produce and censor all the comercials and television programs that are been presented in the Telescreens. They are in charge of telling the Society about those Citizens that are supragood and those who become non-allies of the Society.
Ergo :
BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU”. (1984)
WAR IS PEACE
FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

Division of Broadcasting
This division is in charge of maintenance the InfoBoard, this is the News network. The Comittee is using media to bombard the people with junk, misinformation and brainwash them to be happy and conform to society. they are talking all day about how bad other countries are and how they are better. The InfoBoard has three settings. In the first setting the user is receiving the broadcast of the government channel (the only one available). In the second setting the user can sleep with the monitor in a dark color and in a very low volume pitch subliminal messages. The third setting is used for communication like our telephones. (1984).

Division of Language
This division is in charge of constant revision of the language to update yearly the Newspeak (1984).
Basic principles of Newspeak
The basic idea behind Newspeak was to remove all shades of meaning from language, leaving simple dichotomies (pleasure and pain, happiness and sadness, good thoughts and thoughtcrimes) which reinforce the total dominance of the State. A staccato rhythm of short syllables was also a goal, further reducing the need for deep thinking about language. (See duckspeak)
In addition, words with opposite meanings were removed as redundant, so “bad” became “ungood” and “great” became “doubleplusgood”; and as many words as possible were removed. The ultimate aim of Newspeak was to reduce even the dichotomies to a single word that was a “yes” of some sort: an obedient word with which everyone answered affirmatively to what was asked of them.
Orwell reveals a certain ethnocentrism in his ideas, in that the characteristics of Newspeak that he derides as controlling changes in English are common in perfectly functional agglutinative languages, such as Japanese. His distaste for the replacement of “bad” with “ungood” seems to be largely due to the fact that the practice is foreign to his native language of English. It serves speakers of agglutinative languages quite well for everyday communication, poetry, etc. It is clear that Orwell was an English speaker addressing other English speakers.
The underlying theory of Newspeak is that if something can’t be said, then it can’t be thought. One question raised by this is whether we are defined by our language, or whether we actively define it. For instance, can we communicate the need for freedom, or organize an uprising, if we don’t have the words for either? This is related to the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, and Ludwig Wittgenstein’s proposition, “The limits of my language mean the limits to my world.”
Examples of Newspeak, from the novel, include: “crimethink”; “doubleplusungood”; and “Ingsoc”. They mean, respectively: “thought-crime”; “extremely bad”; and “English Socialism”, the political philosophy of the Party. The word “Newspeak” itself also comes from the language.
Generically, newspeak has come to mean any attempt to restrict disapproved language by a government or other powerful entity.

The Department of Peace
This department is in charge of the Police Force and the Defense Army. This people are the only ones that can posses and use weapons.

The Protectors
This is the Police Force in charge of destruction of books, art and any way of expresing emotions. (Fahrenheit 451, Equilibrium). They are all around the cities taking care of problems. They use a stunbatton but they can also have guns if needed.

The Defense Army
This division is the one in charge of the army that is battling the never ending war.

The Psycops

One of the things that The Committee has done is to recluit and train people with psychic powers and prepare a force of psychics that only respond to them. This force is named the Psychic Cops or Psycops. Their symbol is the PSHY letter of the Greek alphabet inside the circle that represents The Committee.

The members of the Psycops dress in black with black gauntlets they have to wear the symbol of their Force at all times unless undercover. They respond directly to The Committee and even when there are not more than 200 of them in all the nation and as spies in other countries they are feared by all.

The members of the Psycops are what in Earth Prime were the abusive and brutal Mindwreckers and even their leader Director Darrell Collins is present. One of the more powerful agents of the cops is Agent Anna Maxine Brown from New York.

Is a powerful, dangerous fascist group that know that everyone hates and fear them and like their position of power. But they know that to much could be what the drug-pacified people of the United States need to wake up and overthrow the government. The Committee is very specific and tactful when using the Psycops.

The Department of Love
This department is in charge of emotional response, torture and brainwashing. They have the responsibility to keep the people in check with a monthly “Confession” to their Counselor. They coordinate the Holydays, Two Minutes Hate, The Game and the Quietus to keep people emotionally stable and to be sure they don’t show emotions other than those approved by the Department. They promote sex especially one night sexual relationship and disapprove of things like Love (a prohibited world that can only be used to represent the department) the use of the F*th*r and M*th*r worlds.

Division of Counseling
A division in charge of monitoring the citizens’ behavior and modifying it, if needed, using torture and brainwashing.

Division of Channeling

Division of Population Control
Zero Population Growth – Births are controlled by the Department with this law. The women designated to be birthwomen have to be approved by the government and check for any disease. Sometimes they are chosen by the government to do this job and taken away to a Birth Facility for a period of five months (when they are four months pregnant). They gave birth to the baby, if the baby is sick it is euthanased if not sick then is send to the Growth Facility. In this facility people take care of them and educated them. The Department of Health chooses the caste of the citizen based on the statistics economical projections of the Department of Truth.

Division of Food and Drugs
All the food for the lower castes is made of Nutrisoy a compound with soy and artificial flavored and colored ingredients.

Soma – Is the drug used to keep people happy and without any emotional outbreak. It is also an ant conceptive.

Once someone is non-living it is send to the Department of Health’s Release Facility. There it is processed and used as food nutrient. “Soylent Green is made of People!”. This is a state secret.

Department of Comfort
This department is in charge of keeping the industrial machine working. They control all industries and workload. They produce so that the citizen can consume. They keep the appearance of a capitalist country.

“Most large corporations are now allied into one of two massive customer loyalty programs, US Alliance and Team Advantage, which compete with each other in an extremely fierce manner. US Alliance members include Nike, IBM, Pepsi, McDonald’s, the NRA, and several of the most popular brand-name corporations. Team Advantage members include the Police, ExxonMobil, Burger King, and several companies that hold secondary status to the popularity of US Alliance corporations. (Jennifer Government)

Castes
“The Alpha caste consists of those destined for leadership positions, with Betas filling professional and administrative posts requiring higher education, but without the leadership responsibilities of the Alphas. These two groups together form the upper castes, with Gammas, Deltas and Epsilons comprising the lower castes, each with a descending degree of intelligence (Epsilons being so stupid as to be described as “semi-morons”, and trained to perform the most menial tasks without complaint). People are thus manufactured to fill their jobs, rather than jobs being created for people. Within these classes are sub-groups, plus or minus, which further determines their roles in society (every possible combination appears at least once in the text, with the exception of Delta-Plus). Members of each caste also wear uniforms, the color of which identified which caste they belonged to. Alphas wear grey, Betas mulberry, Gammas green, Deltas khaki, and Epsilons black." (Brave New World)

Α α Alpha – They are trained to fill the leadership positions. Wear Gray uniforms and are more educated.

Β β Betas – They fill professional and administrative posts requiring higher education, but without the leadership responsibilities of the Alphas. They wear mulberry uniforms.

Γ γ Gammas – They can be in the technical positions that requiere certain skill. Must Gamma Minus will be tellers and secretaries. They wear green uniforms.

Δ δ Deltas – They do strong work like construction. They can also be soldiers and policemen. They wear khaki uniforms.

Ε ε Epsilons – They do lower jobs like maintenance, work in the mass production lines, etc. They wear black uniforms.

Esceptions
• Police Force and Psycorps wears Black but are still subject to the caste system and wear their colors when offduty.
• Government officers that are in command positions wear a black band in their left arm when on duty.
• Everyone has a Counsellor and must report to him frecuently. This counsellor is supouse to work as a mole for the government and report any disident toughts or actions.
• There are many different styles of clothes for the consumer to buy but on duty some styles are requiered. Off duty the styles can vary but the colors of the caste must be wear.

Names
“People now take the surnames of the corporations they work for. For example, an employee of ExxonMobil who’s first name is Dan would be named Dan ExxonMobil. A person with two jobs hyphenates their name; thus a person working for both Nike and McDonald’s would have the last name Nike-McDonald’s. Charity workers can also use their charity’s name in a hyphenated surname, but this is uncommon. Unemployed people have no surnames, and thus go only by their first names. "

Corporations are all Government owned or controlled and different names are there just to maintain a sense of freedom of choice to the consumers. People take their surnames from the corporation they work for. "(Jennifer Government)

The Game People that are non allies of the Society and have been release by the Department of Love are presented to the people for killing in mass murder now or them to keep them happy. People drug themselves and get out to the streets in mobs to kill the non ally with a bat. The winner gets a special amount of “d’s” (fixed by the economy) and a Holyday for himself. (Unknown Movie)

“Two minute hate” The use of personal ridicule and emotional hatred to wipe out rational political thought in the novel was epitomized in the “two minute hate”. During this ritual citizens were expected to shout, yell, and ridicule an image of the hated Emmanuel Goldstein, expounding his alternative philosophy (indeed, the image ultimately is perpetually morphed into a bleating sheep). Some see this concept mirrored in many modern political campaigns, which have come to focus less on rational debate of positions and issues, and more on personal vilification of lifestyle choices and wildly exaggerated, intentionally offensive chracterizations of political players (although this phenomenon predates Orwell’s era). (1984)

United Alliance Megacorporation firm created by The Committee to maintain a sense of competence and promove consumerism.
